We engineer and maintain a robust, modern network infrastructure spanning 26 miles of district-owned fiber to ensure uninterrupted, secure digital environments. Through a comprehensive 1:1 device deployment, we provide touch-screen Chromebooks for our students in grades 2-5 and iPads for our early learners.

Our team meticulously balances technical agility, rigorous data privacy compliance, and fiscal responsibility to future-proof our classrooms and maximize the impact of our educational resources. The Role of Technology in the Janesville Classroom

In the School District of Janesville, we recognize that the skills required for modern career and life success have fundamentally evolved, reshaping how we interact, communicate, and collaborate. To prepare our students for this changing landscape, we purposefully weave technology into our instructional models—serving as a dynamic catalyst rather than a passive screen. Through our comprehensive 1:1 initiative, every student receives a school-issued device designed to expand learning boundaries beyond the physical classroom, complement project-based exploration, and deliver equitable, 24/7 access to immersive digital resources that effectively bridge socioeconomic gaps.

Crucially, our mission is to deliver technology into our schools as an experiential, collaborative tool to aid—never replace—the artistry of high-quality teaching. Our device fleets, interactive SMART Boards, and educational applications are utilized at the discretion of our educators to capture curiosity, bridge learning gaps, and support multi-modal instruction tailored to every type of learner. Troubleshooting Quick Fixes

The IT Department has identified a collection of Troubleshooting Quick Fixes that can be performed independently and have been proven to resolve many common issues without requiring administrative intervention.

We encourage students and staff to review these rapid solutions first to minimize downtime and quickly restore device functionality.

These are also great troubleshooting steps that can be used at home with your personal devices.

If these initial steps do not resolve the issue, please submit a Helpdesk ticket through the IT Helpdesk ticketing system, and a technician will be happy to assist you.

Verify you are using SDJ-Secure

How to verify I am using the SDJ-Secure WiFi:

On a Chromebook

Click the Tray in the lower-right corner where you see the Battery, Time, and WiFi.
This will bring up a Menu.
In the lower-left-hand corner of the menu, click the Power icon to open another Menu.
Click on “Restart”

On a District-owned laptop

Click the Wireless Symbol in the lower right-hand corner. In the pop-up, it shows which Wireless you are connected to in the upper-left corner.

If you are not on the SDJ-Secured Wireless, simply click the Arrow button to the right of whatever Wireless you are connected to, and it will allow you to select the SDJ-Secured Wireless

Check for Updates - Chrome

Applying updates to your device is one of the most important things you can do for your system, whether it's a District-owned device or your personal one.

As the system ages, it may no longer be able to run new Apps, Extensions, or websites. This is why the manufacturer puts out system updates for your computer or phone. These updates allow your device to get the necessary updates to run these updated Apps, Extensions, or websites, so checking for updates frequently can be very important.

On a Chrome Device:

To check for updates on your Chromebook, you simply go to the upper right-hand corner of your Google browser and click on the three dots.

In the Bottom right, select the Time / Settings (Click on the time)

In the Bottom left, now select "About ChromeOS

Under "Google ChromeOS" you should be able to select the button that says "Check for Updates".

If this option isn't available, your Chromebook is up to date.

On a Windows Device:

Click on the “Windows Button” at the bottom of your Screen and then left mouse click to look in the Applications for the Gear that says “Settings”
On the left-hand side of the screen, click on “Windows Update.” Most of the time, your device will automatically begin looking for updates.
- If it does not, it will give you a link in the upper right hand corner that says “Check for Updates” (Select this button if available)
- If your device finds updates, it will automatically begin downloading and installing them.
It is recommended that you click on the “Advanced Options” (This isn’t really advanced)
Down just a bit on your screen, you will find the option of “Optional Updates”.
These are not required; however, they often significantly improve your system's performance when available.
If you see any Optional Updates, click them, then on the next screen select them all and click Install.
They will then be added to the download and install que with the rest of your updates.
To go back, simply click on the Windows Update on the left side of the Screen to take you back to the regular updates
When all of the Updates have downloaded and installed, they will either say “Installed” or “Pending Restart”.
If you have some that are “Pending Restart” simply click the Restart Now button when you are ready for the installation to begin.
It is always recommended that you check your Battery life before clicking the Restart button, as you do not want your device to run out of battery in the middle of this process.
Plug your device in for this, or ensure you have at least 75% battery life before
Restarting is recommended.

Restarting your Device

We know that restarting your device can be frustrating and inconvenient when you are in the middle of your workday, but it is truly one of the most effective ways to solve a problem. Think of a restart as a quick refresh for your device. Over time, open applications and background tasks can fill your computer's temporary memory, leading to slow performance, frozen screens, and other unexpected glitches.

When you restart your device, it clears the jammed memory and resets the system to its clean, default state. It is like stepping back to clean up the clutter in your workspace.

Because restarting the device is such an effective fix for common issues, it is one of the first steps our technicians will take to get you back up and running smoothly, which makes this an easy and effective strategy that all students and employees can try to potentially fix the issue faster and get you back to what you were doing.

If a quick restart does not resolve the issue, our team is here to support you. Please put in an IT Helpdesk ticket, and a technician will be happy to assist you as quickly as possible.

When restarting, it is important to note that when you shut the lid, this does NOT turn off the computer nor does it restart. To shut down or restart, you must manually click the series of buttons outlined below to fully restart or shut down the device.

Important Note: Using the Restart button is healthier and provides better results than a full shutdown. Because of this, it is recommended that you utilize the restart button.

It is also important to note that pressing the “Power Button” on your device does not shut down the device; instead, it puts it into sleep mode and will not apply fixes that are applied during a restart.

Click on the Windows Icon at the bottom of your Screen and then click on the Power Button.

When you click the Power Button, you'll see four options.

Lock (This locks the Device at the login Screen)
Sleep (This puts the computer to sleep) (This does not restart or shut down the device)
Shut down
Restart

Note that in the example, if you have any updates pending, it will instead give you the options of:

Update and Shut down
Update and Restart

Then it also gives you the estimated time it believes it will take to perform the update and restart your device.

WiFi Information

SDJ Network Infrastructure: Wireless Connectivity Overview

The School District of Janesville provides a robust, high-capacity wireless networking infrastructure across all campuses and specialty sites to ensure seamless, secure communication and support our 1:1 digital learning environment. To maintain network integrity, maximize operational efficiency, and optimize instructional time, wireless access is segmented into distinct tiers based on device ownership and authentication requirements.

District-Owned Devices: Secure Certificate-Based Wi-Fi

To achieve maximum security and seamless connectivity, all district-issued student and staff endpoints connect to our internal wireless network via automated, Certificate-Based Authentication.

No Manual Logins: District-owned devices do not use standard network usernames or passwords. Instead, a unique, secure digital certificate is preinstalled on the device to serve as its encrypted credential.
Device Restriction: Because standard login credentials cannot be used to bypass this layer, only authorized, district-managed devices with the correct digital certificate can join this secure segment of the SDJ infrastructure.

Guest Wireless Network (Students & Community)

To support family engagement, athletic events, and community collaboration, SDJ provides a dedicated Guest Wireless Network at all school buildings.

Schedule Restrictions: To protect instructional integrity and minimize classroom distractions, the Guest Wireless network is completely deactivated during the school day. It automatically becomes available at the conclusion of standard school hours and remains accessible throughout weekends.
Authentication & Safety: This network does not require an access password for entry. However, in compliance with the Children's Internet Protection Act (CIPA) and district data governance models, filtering is enforced on all guest connections at all times.

Staff BYOD & Personal Device Support Policy

The School District of Janesville provides a restricted SDJ-BYOD wireless network intended exclusively for staff-owned cellular devices.

Operational Purpose: This network tier is provisioned to support the use of mobile Multi-Factor Authentication (MFA) applications for staff professional duties and district account access.
Strict Access Limits: The SDJ-BYOD network is not available for student use. Furthermore, the Janesville School District does not support the integration of personal staff or student laptops into the district network ecosystem.
IT Support Scope: Technicians from the IT Department can provide support for the installation and troubleshooting of district-required Multi-Factor Authentication applications. However, IT personnel cannot provide technical support or troubleshooting assistance for any other hardware, software, or connectivity issues on personally owned laptops or devices.
