Board Appointment Process

The Board of Education announces the resignation of board member Susan Johnson, effective on February 10, 2026. Johnson, who has served the district since April 2024, is stepping down due to a relocation outside the district.

In accordance with Wisconsin State Statute and Board Procedure, the vacancy will be filled via board appointment. Because the vacancy occurred after late November, the appointee will serve until the April 2027 spring election  (the second upcoming spring election).

The board and interested candidates will follow this process:

• Interested candidates must submit a letter addressed to the Board of Education by 4 p.m. Wednesday, Feb. 25. Letters of application must not exceed two (2) typewritten pages and must request appointment to the vacancy and include information relating to their qualifications.
• Letters are to be submitted via email to gfuhrmann@janesville.k12.wi.us or in person to the Educational Services Center (527 S. Franklin St., Janesville) to the attention of the Office of the Superintendent.
• A three (3) member Board committee shall be appointed to review the applications. At the committee's discretion, interviews might be scheduled. The committee may choose to recommend no candidate, one candidate, or two candidates from among the applications.
• In the event the committee recommends a single candidate, the full Board shall vote on whether to appoint that candidate.
• In the event the committee proposes two (2) candidates, the full Board shall vote on which of the candidates to appoint, with each Board member casting one (1) written, signed ballot for one of the applicants.
• If no candidates apply, the Board may choose not to fill the vacancy.

The Board is working to complete this process to appoint a new member by Tuesday, April 28, 2026.

Once the board appoints a candidate to the vacant seat, the candidate will file the oath of office and be seated on the board until a successor is elected by the community during the Spring 2027 election and takes office.

While this vacancy is being filled by appointment through 2027, the upcoming Spring 2026 election features three other seats on the ballot, with four candidates currently running for those positions.
