All About the Students
The Program for English Language Learners in the School District of Janesville is exactly that---a program for students whose primary language experiences include languages other than English and who have not yet mastered the high level of academic English proficiency needed for the 21st Century. Our services for English Language Learners (ELLs) start with the premise that the education of ELLs should lead to adult lives as fully enfranchised, productive participants in our communities and include flexible programming designed to meet students' needs. While most of our instruction occurs in English, we are continually striving to provide the most native language support possible, to offer more opportunities for heritage language study, and to encourage students and families to maintain their home languages as an essential element of effective family life as well as a valuable academic resource. This multidimensional approach to academic achievement is evident in our program mission:
Engage ELLs in social and academic English language development and grade-level curriculum and empower them in their multicultural identities.
