Regularly scheduled meetings of the Board of Education are held the second and fourth Tuesday of the month at 5:30 p.m. These meetings are typically held in the Board Room at the Educational Services Center, 527 S. Franklin Street. All meetings are open to the public except the closed session portion of the meeting.

The public is notified of the meetings through the local media. Meeting agendas can be found by selecting agendas on the Board of Education button. The public is invited to attend and can address the board at the meetings under the Citizens Comments portion of the agenda.  It is suggested to contact the Assistant Board Clerk call 608-743-5056 or email dblazer@janesville.k12.wi.us  for specific information regarding public comment.

For those seeking information on television, the meetings are broadcast live on Cable Channels 96 and 993.  The board meetings are rebroadcast on the Thursday and Sunday following the meeting.  The rebroadcast times are: 3:00 AM, 6:00 AM, 9:00 AM, Noon, 3:00 PM, 6:00 PM, and 9:00 PM.  The board meetings can also be seen by accessing the School District of Janesville's On-Demand webchannel.

In the board meeting the Board officially acts on issues from the prior committee meetings and agenda items requiring a board decision that evening. Agendas for the board and committee meetings are determined in advance by the Board President and the Superintendent.

There are two standing committees which meet on the second Tuesday of the Month. The committees consist of Personnel/Policy and Curriculum and Finance/Buildings and Grounds. Various items are discussed, reviewed, and/or decided on at the committee meeting.  Motions are made and brought to the regular board meeting for discussion or decision. There are certain topics over which the Board and Committees must meet in closed session meeting. For example closed session is usually held for salary negotiations, expulsions and personnel matters. Items of this type are handled in closed session. The school district is governed under the open meeting law for closed session. Announcements must be made as to topics that will be discussed in the closed session. Action taken in closed session is reported at the next regular board meeting.

The entire Board is actively involved in curriculum development. There is an attempt at the second meeting of the month to include agenda items for discussion or review dealing with curriculum.  In addition, changes to the agenda structure have been made overtime by past Boards which continue at this time i.e., greater use of the consent agenda, pledge of allegiance and others.
